The group of ministers (GoM) on Telangana on Saturday decided to ask the Planning Commission to work out the modalities of granting adequate funds to the backward areas of Seemandhra region of Andhra Pradesh. The move comes in the wake of widespread protests in the region against the Centre’s decision to bifurcate the state.
According to sources, the backward areas of Rayalseema and coastal Andhra Pradesh are expected to get substantial funds to meet their developmental needs. The GoM , however, will not travel to AP even as protesting TDP MPs on Saturday demanded that the GoM meetings should not be held unless the grievances of the agitating people of Seemandhra region in Andhra Pradesh are addressed
Before the GoM meet, four TDP MPs, including Reddy, had reached North Block and tried to gheraoed home minister Sushilkumar Shinde, who chairs the GoM, requesting him to include representatives from Joint Action Committee (JAC) in the GoM.
Sources said the ministries concerned had sent very brief status report to the GoM. But now they have been asked to make specific recommendations on the basis of terms of reference of the GoM. The next meeting of GoM will take place on November 7.
“We have received around 2,000 emails (from the public) giving us information on bifurcation of AP. All these are being scrutinised,” said Shinde. The GoM has fixed November 5 as last date for receiving such suggestions.
