Raising the hopes of soldiers, a committee headed by external affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee to look into rank and pay concerns raised by the armed forces over the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations has submitted its report to the Prime Minister.
The armed forces had argued that the revised pay panel report had diluted the status of lieutenant generals, lieutenant colonels and let the jawans down by cutting their pensions. Sources said soldiers could look forward to a favourable response from the government.
There was sweeping discontent in the higher echelons over lieutenant generals and equivalent (who are not army commanders) being excluded from the HAG+ (higher administrative grade) pay band. Only army commanders and DGP (director generals of police) figured in this grade. Now, some senior lieutenant generals are likely to be equated with DGPs.
