Tarla Dalal

Author of over 100 cookbooks, Padma Shri awardee and the darling of the Indian kitchen, celebrity chef Tarla Dalal, 77, passed away on Wednesday in Mumbai, following a cardiac arrest. Celebrities from all walks of life mourned the demise of Dalal, who was touted as the queen of vegetarian food.

“My heart has just skipped a beat. It’s unbelievable. I once told her, ‘You are the dowry gift of India’, because her cook books are the one-point-reference for every newly-married Indian girl,” said Michelin-starred chef Vikas Khanna.

Celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor, too, is shocked. “She was a self-trained chef, and the one to start this mass movement of empowering women through home-style cooking. We shared a great bond, and she would always greet me with a hug,” said Kapoor.

“RIP Tarla Dalal. She lives on through the taste of her wonderful recipes (sic),” politician Narendra Modi posted on Twitter. “Tarla Dalal Ji, you made cooking so special like no other (sic),” tweeted choreographer Saroj Khan.
