A CONSIGNMENT of cashew nuts worth about Rs 27 lakh sent from Kolkata was embezzled on way and instead of reaching the consignee was stored in a godown in the City. The misappropriation of goods was discovered and spotted by the Kolkata merchant with the help of MG Road police. A case has been registered against the defaulters and a police team from Hubli has arrived to book the accused.

CSP Manoj Rai told Hindustan Times that a truckload of goods including cashew nut and coconut powder was dispatched by M/s Indo-Arya Central Transport Company on January 18. The consignment was to reach the company’s godown located in the City at Dewas Naka. When the goods did not reach beyond due date, a case was filed by company officials at Old Hubli police station on January 27.

Local branch manager Sanjay Singh approached the local police for help and a search operation was mounted by keeping a lookout for suspicious sale/transfer of goods. MG Road police received tip-off about sighting of cartons bearing company insignia in Siyaganj area. Acting on the information, the police intercepted an auto rickshaw carrying 25 cartons in the Chiman Bagh area on Tuesday.

Accused Suresh Pagare of Smriti Nagar engaged in the business of cotton yarn was apprehended in this connection. He later owned up involvement in the racket of embezzling goods and disclosed location of a godown in Banganga area from where the consignment of cashew nuts was seized on Tuesday and coconut powder was seized from another portion, visibly an extension of the premise, on Wednesday. The total worth of the consignment is above Rs 27 lakh.

Company manager from Hubli Balvinder Singh, who is in the City in this connection, lodged a formal complaint with the police.

The MG Road police have registered a case under Section 102 of the Cr PC. Meanwhile, a police party from Kolkata has also arrived and is completing paperwork for transfer of the accused, as a case is already registered with them under Sections 420 and 406 of the IPC. Rai lauded the efforts of MG Road TI RS Jhala in successfully solving the case.
