Reality TV star Jade Goody has been booted out of Celebrity Big Brother. Goody, at the centre of a racism controversy following her remarks about actress and fellow housemate Shilpa Shetty, got the thumbs down from 82 per cent of the reported five million viewers who voted on who should leave the reality show.

Shetty, who too was up for eviction, waited tensely through the counting. “I nearly suffered a heart attack, but I think I’m OK now,” Shetty said after being told that she would stay on.

Goody’s ‘racist’ remarks had created a nationwide furore and threatened to sully Britain’s image abroad. It also hurt broadcaster Channel 4 financially, with Carphone Warehouse pulling out of its £3 million (Rs 24 crore) sponsorship deal.

Afterwards, a tearful Jade requested Channel 4 to let her go quietly. She said she was “petrified” by the idea of facing the public “because people think I’m a racist b****”… I’ve never been more scared in my life.” Goody may be questioned by Hertfordshire police, which is reviewing tapes of the show and conducting an inquiry, reported The Guardian.
