Goons harass woman scribe, cops look the other way

india Updated: Jul 19, 2006 01:22 IST

HOW CONCERNED are Lucknow police about the safety of women was witnessed on Monday. Three armed goons not only hurled expletives at a lady scribe but also issued her life threats in presence of a sub-inspector (S-I) on the busy Vidhan Sabha Marg in broad daylight.

The cop, instead of initiating action against the culprits, snubbed the scribe and allowed the youths to go.

SSP GK Goswami endorsed his subordinate’s action by not responding to the call made by the harried scribe for help. The telephone attendant with the SSP’s camp office refused to transfer the call to his boss saying that the latter did not want to take the call. A case in this connection was registered only after the intervention of top cops on Tuesday. However, the culprits were yet to be traced.

The incident took place when the scribe of an English daily was heading towards her office in the noon in a Qualis jeep (UP 70-6606). She had reached the Royal Hotel crossing when a Bolero jeep (UP 61 D-8800) hit the rear of the vehicle. As the scribe resisted it the jeep’s driver hit the vehicle again.

Seeing the adamant attitude of the driver the scribe came out of her vehicle. Before she could have walked towards the Bolero, the three youths got down and started hurling expletives at the scribe. She immediately called up her colleagues in the office who failed in their attempt to talk to the SSP despite making several calls. They later informed the SP (East) Ajay Shanker Rai who sent some cops to the spot. A sub-inspector who had reached the place started harassing the scribe instead of chastising the youths. The goons claiming themselves as associates of an influential MP from Ghazipur continued misbehaving with the scribe in the presence of the cops. The cop later left the place asking the youths to go away and issued a warning to the scribe not to intimate senior cops about the matter.
