Govt politicising relief: Jamuna

india Updated: Sep 04, 2006 01:17 IST

ACCUSING THE State Government of politicising the issue of flood relief, leader of Opposition in the State Assembly, Jamuna Devi, said on Sunday that an amount of Rs 261 crore was already available with the Shivraj Singh Chouhan Government under the calamity relief fund, yet it was not spending that amount and demanding more funds from Government of India.

She further said that the Central Government provided an amount of Rs 98 crore immediately after floods hit MP and also sent a Central team for assessment of situation. The Central team has returned to Delhi only a couple of days ago. Even before the team could submit its report, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, BJP MPs and MLAs from MP have decided to stage a dharna at Delhi for more Central funds to tide over flood situation, she added.

Jamuna Devi said that Centre has always been magnanimous in providing funds to the BJP Government in MP. The Centre would provide additional funds for flood relief but till then, the State Government ought to spend from the funds already available to it under for calamity relief. The State Government should also immediately send utilisation certificate to the Centre as to how it spent funds provided by the Central Government for calamity relief over the past three years.

The State Government should also give details of financial assistance provided to the farmers hit by various natural calamities over the past three years, she demanded.  Jamuna Devi said that the State Government was not convening an all-party meeting to discuss flood situation in MP because its ‘inefficiency’ to provide relief to flood-hit people would be exposed.
