The government should crack down on separatist elements and bring the situation under control in Jammu and Kashmir, senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha said in Chennai on Friday.

"The government should come down heavily on separatist elements and we must bring the situation under control," he said, responding to a question on the issue raised by a member of Madras Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) at a function.

"There is no question of allowing even a small portion of Jammu and Kashmir to secede from India. What is happening in Jammu and Kashmir today is painful," he said.
