Govt to provide free calcium supplements to elderly women

Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Tuesday announced to provide free calcium supplements to the women above the age of 55.

At the state-level function of International Day for the Elderly Persons organised at the auditorium of the National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI), here Hooda said that it was commonly seen that women faced acute bone-related problems after the age of 55 and the health issue was attributed to low-calcium levels.

Now, the state would give free calcium supplements to ensure good health of the elderly women, Hooda said.

He also announced 50% concession on the Haryana roadways for all those who are above 65 years.The bus travel scheme will be implemented from January 1 next year.

Currently, women above 55 years of age were eligible for the concessional bus travel in the state owned service.

On the occasion, he directed the social justice and empowerment department to start an exclusive helpline number for the assistance of senior citizens.

“Society must ensure respect to the elderly persons and the state government has a special focus on the welfare of elders. Our government has an annual budget of `1,036 crore, the highest in the country, for the old age pension to more than 13 lakh beneficiaries,” he said.

The state gives `20,000 monthly pension to the freedom fighters. On the occasion, Hooda honoured senior citizens and gram panchayats for their various social contributions.

Chaudhary Ranbir Singh Centenarian Award was given to 103-year-old Uday Singh of Loha Kalan village, Jhajjar for his contributin in social welfare activities.
Mishro Devi of Roliawas village, Rewari was selected for Mother Teresa Award for fighting odd family conditions.

Sardar Vallabh Bhai Bravery Award was given to Sumer Chand, a resident of industrial area, Sonepat while Jyotiba Phule Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred upon Lalchand Godara of Nuhianwala village in Sirsa.

On the occasion, panchayat of Devlawas in Rewari, Ateli of Narnaul and Lohari Jatu of Bhiwani district were honoured for pursuing various pro-elders activities.

Hooda honoured 93-year-old Shakuntala Devi of the city with a shawl. Hooda laid foundation stone rail over bride (ROB) at Ghogripur village near here. Earlier, he inaugurated Rajiv Gandhi Vidyut Sadan, the local office of the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam at Sector 12 here.
