On Congress president Sonia Gandhi's request, the Government has decided to raise the pension of the three categories of freedom fighters. The enhancement ranges from Rs 3540 and Rs 4091.

In a press release on Thursday, the All India Congress Committee thanked Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for his gesture of increasing the "swatantratra sainik samman" pension from Rs 7500 to Rs 11581 per month for former political prisoners of Andaman; Rs  6450 to Rs 10190 for those who suffered outside British India and Rs 6000 to Rs 10000 for other freedom fighters, including INA activists.

Sonia had written to the Prime Minister on October 23 to consider increasing the pension of freedom fighters and bringing out of a commemorative postage stamp as part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi's satyagraha movement.
