india Updated: Jan 12, 2007 02:22 IST

THE HAKEEM Syed Zia ul Hasan Government Unani medical college, Bhopal has been included in the model college scheme of the Union Government. This became possible as a result of the initiative of the Minister for Medical Education Minister Ajay Vishnoi.

Union Government has sanctioned an amount of Rs three crore for the Unani College in this regard. The first installment of Rs 1.50 crore has been received by the State Government, which will be spent for the promotion of the Unani medical treatment as well as to bring about qualitative improvement in the standard of Unani medicine education.

A proposal was sent by the Ayush department of the Madhya Pradesh Government to the Union Government in 2005 in this regard.

Colleges completing 10 years of their establishment are benefited under the scheme of the Union Government but due to the efforts of Vishnoi and Indian medicine system director Dr Jabbar Dhakwala, the 10 years norm was relaxed and sanction of Rs three crore has been accorded.

The Unani Medical College was established in 1998 by the State Government keeping in view the promotion of the unani medical system. For the first time in 2003, the State Government created 14 educational posts and teachers were appointed on contract.

Fifty acres of land was allotted at Chunabhatti, Bhopal for the colleges of unani, ayurved and homeopathy. The construction work of the college buildings are almost complete and all three colleges will shortly be moved in the first ever-joint premises in the country, where treatment and education under one roof would be provided to citizens of the State.
