Children who love to be on their own can do so more freely now without giving anxiety attacks to their parents.

Children who love to be on their own can do so more freely now without giving anxiety attacks to their parents. The moms and dads can use a handy tracking device to check on their kids and also warn them should they stray into a danger zone.

The child tracking device, based on the Global Positioning System (GPS), is developed by the students and scientists of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) here.

It is going to be the size of a sleek mobile phone, costing eventually about Rs 5000, and can be fitted into the child's shoe, belt or worn like a wristwatch. Information from this device is periodically transferred to the General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) linked to a central server.

"Parents sitting at home, can see on the website, the map of the locality in which the child is expected to move around and mark the areas on the map which, according to them are danger areas as far as the child is concerned,” Prabhakar, one of the project scientists said When the child enters the danger zone, the parent gets an SMS and the child a warning buzzer.

There is also a panic button for the child to trigger in case of an emergency, he said. The good news is that the new device would encourage parents to let children venture out alone.

However, the bad news is that the system of updating information every five minutes would make it difficult for children to lie about their movements.
