The services of graft-tainted 1979 batch IAS couple Arvind Joshi and Tinoo Joshi were terminated on Monday.

Both were placed under suspension in February 2010 after an income tax raid on their house led to detection of wealth in excess of Rs 350 crore and recovery of Rs 3 crore cash.

The wealth they had amassed was highly disproportionate to their source of income. The termination from service order was served at their house and handed over to Tinoo Joshi.

The couple now has the option of either making a representation to the President of India or move court against the termination order.

Despite repeated efforts, the Joshis could not be reached for comment. The process of termination had been lingering for more than two years.

After the income tax search, the state government had suspended the couple and set up a committee under former chief secretary Nirmala Buch to look into the allegations against them.

Buch recommended the officers be dismissed from service. Consequently, the state government moved the proposal for their dismissal with the Centre’s department of personnel and training (DoPT).

On a representation of the Joshis, the Centre asked the state government to give them a chance to represent themselves. The state government asked them to state their case.

A source in the state’s general administration department said the Joshis were asked to represent their case, but they did not.

Subsequently, the state government moved a proposal to the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) seeking their termination from service.
