The NDA government has assured all help to Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu to augment resources for the Seemandhra region, which will form the remaining part of Andhra Pradesh, including the possibility of a special category status.

Naidu, who is set to take over chief minister of bifurcated Andhra, slated for June 2, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, water resources minister Uma Bharti and finance minister Arun Jaitley on Friday for financial support and water-sharing arrangements.

At his meeting with Bharti, Naidu had also invited former rural development minister Jairam, who had overseen matters relating to the division of the state in the previous government.

“The Centre would ensure the interests of the people of both the states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are duly taken care of,” Bharti said. Union civil aviation minister Ashok Gajpati Raju was also present in the meeting.

When the bifurcation takes effect, newly carved Telengana state will be revenue-adequate, with Hyderabad as its capital, while residual Andhra Pradesh will be revenue-deficit. “We will need special assistance. I had developed Hyderabad into an IT capital. I am seeking equitable assistance for both states, as my party has support in both states,” Naidu told HT.

The previous government had promised to accord the residual state with “special category” status for five years to make good the revenue shortfall because of the state’s bifurcation.

“After the division, there is a resource constraint which the successor state of Andhra Pradesh will suffer from, primarily because Hyderabad will be a part of Telangana. We had raised the issue of financially supporting Seemandhra in Parliament,” Jaitley said.

Meanwhile, Andhra Pradesh Governor ESL Narsimhan met Union home minister Rajnath Singh to discuss the bifurcation of the state.
