Age, sex and religion seemed to be no bar for them. They are the gravediggers with a difference. They used to dig out bodies struck by lightening!
The Malihabad police in Lucknow have recently busted this gravedigger gang. It was found that the gang had dug up bodies of Muslim woman Hasmutul Nisha (30) of Ibrahimpur in Sitapur district, Arun Kumar (12) of Patarkal locality, Istekhar (60) a resident of Kahatauli in Malihabad Mango belt who died many years ago and 13-year-old Guddi, a Hindu girl.
Since July, many bodies were dug out from their graves in Lucknow and Sitapur districts but the police were groping in the dark. Now, the racket has finally been busted.
It is learnt that the kingpin of the racket was Dr Rajendra of Sitapur who used to offer as much as Rs 50,000 for a body or a skeleton. It is still not clear why Dr Rajendra Prasad used to offer so much money for a mere skeleton.
According to Lucknow's Senior Superintendent of Police Dr GK Goswami, what has baffled the investigating team was the fact that only those bodies were stolen that had been struck by lightening.
Three people - Rajesh, Brij Pal and Umesh - have been arrested in this connection. They confessed that they had even dug out graves of people who died ten or 20 years ago after having been struck by lightening.
The doctor believed that such bodies retained electro-magnetic properties even after many years of death.
Dr Rajendra owns a clinic in Atariya. It is learnt that the absconding doctor used to send the purchased bodies to his contacts.
According to the SSP, Lucknow, though the police has identified six men and arrested three suggests that similar gangs operate in many districts and that their number could be well above 50.
