Asia’s Sexiest Vegetarian male gave up eating meat on a whim 35 years ago, long before it became the fashionable thing to do. Possibly why Amitabh Bachchan can’t say what its benefits are. They may exist, he says, but he has never bothered to find out if there are any.
“I am a vegetarian neither by choice nor because of religion. I used to eat meat but gave it up on a whim. Now I am a vegetarian and have been for almost 35 years. I cannot say what the benefits are, and quite frankly, have never bothered to find out if at all there are any. This does not take anything away from benefits that do exist. It’s just that I am not aware of them,” said the Big B.
Bachchan named his father as his inspiration, because he had gone from being strictly non-vegetarian to being completely vegan. But with the exception of Amitabh, the Bachchan family is not vegetarian, though his daughter [Shweta Nanda] has a preference for vegetarian food, revealed the superstar. And what about bahu Aishwarya?
On a recent chat on television, Abhishek and Amitabh were asked whether Aishwarya had, like any Indian bahu, cooked anything special. Abhishek had replied, “We are simple eaters and happy with saada daal chawal.” Amitabh Bachchan was more specific, “She has not done anything particular yet, but she made some gorgeous halwa when she came in as a bride.” Amitabh Bachchan is a simple eater.
The Big B’s favourite food is dal chawal, but if he can’t get he’ll make do with bread and butter. “There was a time when vegetarian food was a problem. Especially, before the influx of Indian restaurants all over the world. I would always manage with bread and butter and curds and eggs.”
