Grenade blast in Guwahati, 15 injured

Suspected Ulfa militants carried out a grenade attack on a police checking post near the Paltan Bazar police here on Sunday at 7.55 pm. 15 persons including two police men were injured in the grenade blast.

Police said that two motor cycle borne youths lobbed a grenade on a police checking point near the Paltan Bazar police station. Three girl basketball players from Hasimara town in West Bengal were among the injured. The site of the blast is near the Gauhati railway station and is always a busy point in the city.

"We suspect the grenade blast is a handiwork of Ulfa militants. Investigations are on. It was an attack on police", said AP Raut , Additional DG of Assam police, who had visited the blast site.

All the injured were admitted at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH). Injury to two policemen was stated to be serious.

The three girls injured in the blast are student of Kendriya Vidyalaya , Hasimara in West Bengal. They came to the city to participate in school level basket ball tournament. The girls were identified as Priya Roy, Jharna Jha and Chana Banu.

"The injured girls who are member of a basket ball team of Hasimara Kendriya Vidyalaya in West Bengal will be sent to their home state tomorrow with state govt.'s care", said Himnata Biswa Sarma, Assam Health and education minister.

Chief minister Gogoi condemned the grenade blast in Guwahati and said that it was an act of cowardice. Gogoi on Saturday reviewed the law and order situation after Ulfa carried out three grenade blasts in Lakshimpur and Karbi Anglong district in last week.
