Grenade explosion kills six in Kashmir

Two policemen and a Hizbul Mujahideen militant were among six persons killed and an equal number injured as militants exploded a grenade in Jammu and Kashmir, where a major tragedy was averted with timely detection of an explosive device on Srinagar-Baramulla Highway on Thursday.
The grenade was lobbed by militants on a security vehicle at Kulgam in Anantnag district last night causing injuries to three civilians and a CRPF jawan, official sources said.
They said the injured were rushed to hospital where one of the civilians from Malpora-Kulgam area succumbed this morning.
A Special Police Officer was killed and another injured in a gunbattle with militants at Sangaldan in Udhampur district this morning, the sources said.
They said the encounter broke out when security forces cordoned off the area following information about presence of three militants there.
The operation in the area was still continuing when last reports were received, the sources said.
Constable Ghulam Mohammad of police station Maisuma, who was among 12 security personnel injured in a grenade attack at Badshah Chowk in the heart of the city yesterday, succumbed to injuries at SHMS hospital, the sources said.
A Hizbul Mujahideen militant, Roshan Din who came to his residence in ramban last night, was killed by a joint team of army and police when he tried to run away after he was cordoned off, the sources said.
One AK 47 rifle alongwith two magazines and 60 rounds were recovered from the slain mjilitant, they said.
