Threaten RPF and Rly officials

FOUR GOVERNMENT Railway Police (GRP) men threatened the Senior Commandant (RPF) and railway officials on duty at gunpoint and chased them brandishing firearms on Monday.

The incident took place when a team of 13 railway officials, including DCM (NER) Shishir Somwanshi and Senior Commandant (RPF) AK Sinha, was deputed at Gonda Railway Station by senior DCM Dr Monica Agnihotri, following complaints of extortion on trains of this route by the anti-socials, at about 1.35 am.

But, the team on reaching Gonda discovered that the anti-social elements were none other than the ‘goons in uniform’, who had allegedly indulged in extorting money from the passengers of the Howrah-bound Jan Sewa Express.

The frightened passengers aired their grievance with the team. They said three men in compartments 3, 4 and 5 (from engine) in the general coach were extorting money while the train came to halt. Senior Commandant and the railway officials intercepted the foursome, and grilled them.

However, this annoyed the four GRP men — SI (Night Officer) Subhash Chandra Yadav, Prahlad Singh, Subhash Yadav and Yaduvanshi Yadav, who went to the posts and brought rifles threatening the senior commandant and others to leave the place or face dire consequences.

The GRP men, allegedly also resorted to bashing up the team members and raining lathis on them, leaving one RPF constable injured seriously. The constable was recuperating at the Badshah Nagar Railway hospital.

As if this was not over, the GRP men then chased the retreating team till 25 kms with firearms. Somehow, the team escaped the wrath of the erring cops under cover of darkness and managed to escape.

DRM (NER) Amitabh Lal apprised the Chief Secretary, Home Ministry and senior GRP officials about the incident. Also, a strong protest was lodged by the railways with the State government. An FIR has been lodged with the GRP Gorakhpur.

Additional Director General of Police (ADG) GRP BK Bhalla said, the four erring cops have been suspended and an inquiry has ordered into the incident.
