The Uttar Pradesh police on Sunday announced the arrest of a security guard in connection with the sexual assault and murder of a woman in Mohanlalganj tehsil of the state capital.
Contrary to the rape-murder angle suspected so far, the police said the 32-woman was beaten to death by the accused after she resisted his rape attempt.
The accused, Ram Sevak, worked in the same institute where the woman, a widowed mother of two, was employed.
The police said Ram Sevak, 40, knew the woman, who was looking for a new rented accommodation.
“He tricked her into accompanying him for house hunting by calling her from a stolen mobile phone and posing as one ‘Rajeev’,” additional director general of police (ADG) Sutapa Sanyal said.
“He concealed his face with a helmet and took the woman house hunting on a motorcycle. However, he took her to a deserted school in his village, Balsinghkheda, and attempted to rape her. When she resisted, he attacked her,” Sanyal added.
The murder came to light on Thursday after a watchman spotted the nude body of the woman on the school premises and informed the police around 6.30am.
The school is barely 500 metres from Ram Sevak’s home in the village. He has two sons and a daughter.
Sanyal said the woman’s body had 12 injuries including a puncture wound in the face and one deep wound 10 cm long in the pelvic cavity.
“It was this pelvic cavity wound which, in all probability, led to her death as the maximum bleeding occurred from there,” she said.
The ADG added Ram Sevak also had nine injuries on his body, which appear to have been caused by struggling woman’s nails. She said medical examination indicated his injuries were four days old.
Facing severe criticism following the murder, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav had put Sanyal in charge of the probe and announced that the state government would bear the full expenses of the education of woman’s two children till Class 10.
The CM had also announced a fixed deposit of Rs 10 lakh for the two children.
The police suspended two personnel after the crime, but more officials could face action because pictures of the woman’s nude body found their way to the internet.
