The sequel fever is on. Next in queue is Gadar – Ek Prem Katha. The main protagonist, Sunny Deol, will feature in the sequel. But director Anil Sharma, won’t. The sequel will be directed by Guddu Dhanoa.
Sources reveal, “There were some differences between Zee Telefilms, the production house, and Anil Sharma during the making of the original. The differences persisted even after the film was released.”
According to the production house, Sharma overshot the budget and ended up spending double the amount earmarked for the film. “That’s why the production house has decided to go ahead with another director,” add sources.
So how was Dhanoa chosen? “Guddu Dhanoa shares a great rapport with the Deols. He has directed both the Deol brothers in the past and has made five films with Sunny,” the sources add.
The five films are: Ziddi, Salaakhen, 23rd March 1931: Shaheed, Jaal: The Trap and the recently released Big Brother.
“Guddu suffered a huge loss after his last film Big Brother bombed. Sunny intervened and has talked with Zee.. which has taken the satellite rights of the film and also signed an MOU with Deol and Dhanoa for Gadar II.”
After the super success of Gadar-Ek Prem Katha, the production house was toying with the idea of making multiple projects. It had also got into worldwide distribution. Zee also had its overseas distribution offices in London, Mauritius and New York. But nothing materialised.
Now, after a hiatus, Zee is set to get into film production and distribution. It has already acquired the worldwide rights of Sunny Deol’s next Kaafila.
“Dhanoa is expected to make a trailer of Gadar II. It will be shown with Kaafila, which may be released by end of August. It will be a promo with only a voice-over,” say sources.
