The arrest of Gujarat’s additional director general PP Pandey, a key accused in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case, is imminent as the Gujarat high court on Wednesday rejected his anticipatory bail plea.

The CBI court, which too rejected the anticipatory bail on Wednesday, had issued a non-bailable warrant against him on Tuesday.

“We will go for his arrest now,” a CBI official said after the court verdict. However, sources in the Gujarat police said Pandey would approach the Supreme Court, seeking the anticipatory bail.

Pandey did not appear in the CBI court on Tuesday or Wednesday.

In July, the CBI charge-sheeted Pandey and seven other policemen for the killing of Ishrat and three others – who, the Gujarat police said, were terrorists – in June 2004.

The charge sheet described the encounter as a joint operation of the Gujarat police and officials of the Intelligence Bureau.
