The Ahmedabad police arrested Dinesh Thakkar alias Kalgi, the betting king of Gujarat, who runs a more than Rs 500-crore empire.

Joint commissioner (detection of crime branch) of Ahmedabad police Mohan Jha said Kalgi was detained under the Prevention of Anti-social Activities Act and sent to Jamnagar jail.

He said, "We have arrested him in connection with a gambling den raid on October 31. This is for the first time that a bookie has been slapped with the PASA. He will remain in jail for at least three months."

Kalgi was wanted since his aide, Raju Narang, and six others were caught red-handed while placing bets on the Australia-Sri Lanka Twenty20 match. Raju later named Kalgi as his partner.

A racket insider said the volume of the state's betting industry was close to Rs 1,000 crore.

"The recent India-New Zealand series attracted around Rs 350 crore. But a single match between India and Pakistan could record a volume of as much as Rs 400 crore."

A police official said: "Kalgi's network stretches from India to Pakistan and is considered to be among the 10 top bookies of India."
