Gujarat: Children rescued, situation better
All stranded children and staff were rescued on Wednesday as the situation in the rain-hit state improved.
All the 135 children and 18 staff stranded at a boarding school in Kheda district of Gujarat for the last four days were rescued on Wednesday as the situation in the rain-hit state returned to normal and evacauted people returned to their homes.
"All children and 18 staff members have been rescued and have been taken to a school in Limbasi village, which is 12 kms away," District Superintendent of Police SS Trivedi told.
With the water level near the boarding school Bharwada Ashramshala in Bharwada village, where the children and 18 staff members were stranded, receding the authorities launched rescue operations which had to be suspended on Tuesday due to the gush of water from a nearby canal.
Some children were rescued by boats and others were brought on shoulders by the State Reserve Police and CRPF jawans, Trivedi said.
The Sardar Sarovar dam, one of the biggest dams in the country, overflowed due to continuous rains in catchment areas and the authorities have warned those living on river banks and in neighbouring Bharuch district that water was being released in the river.
