The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has questioned the handover of land at Sanand to the Tatas for the Nano project. It has also expressed doubts over the job prospects for the Gujarati youth.
GPCC spokesman Arjun Modhvadia said a portion of the 1,100 acres is disputed, as it was leased out many years ago to an animal welfare organisation during the drought about a century ago and then it was handed over to an agriculture institute.
Pointing out that the matter is still pending in court, he said the land was given to the Tatas at throwaway prices even though there were indications that the local youth would not get jobs at the plant.
The Tatas had announced in Singur that everybody in the closed plant would be relocated, he asked, “How, then, the jobs at the Sanand plant would go to the Gujarati youth?”
However, the land price is likely to be decided at a cabinet meeting next week.
