Unidentified gunmen stormed the office of the Jaffna-based Tamil daily Uthayan  on Tuesday, killing two and wounding four.

Ironically, Sri Lanka was preparing to observe World Freedom Day on Wednesday.

N Vithiyatharan, the editor of the paper's Colombo-based sister daily Sudar Oli said that men dressed in black, barged into the office of the daily at about 7.30 pm, and calling out for senior reporter Kuhanathan, started firing with their AK-47s indiscriminately.

Kuhanathan made good his escape, but two others were killed and four were wounded.

Vithiyatharan said that the attackers smashed computers and other office equipment.

A Sri Lankan military official in Colombo said that as per information available to him, one person was killed and two were wounded in the attack on the office of Uthayan.
