Gurdwara ex-director for Canada polls

india Updated: Jan 23, 2013 00:29 IST

Sukhminder Virk will be running as the British Columbia Liberal party candidate in Surrey-Newton.

Former director of Surrey's Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara is making the leap to politics for the 2013 elections, the party announced on Friday.

Virk will be formally nominated as the BC Liberal candidate for the Surrey-Newton riding in February.

"We need to continue to take the province the way it is (going)," Virk told Vancouver Desi. "There is no doubt that the BC Liberals are the best hope for a strong economy in British Columbia."

Virk said he would focus on economic growth, jobs, families and youth involvement.

While Virk plans to bring forward any Sikh issues or concerns if elected, he's not solely running as a Sikh candidate.

"I'm running for all of BC, not just the Sikh community. There is a large Sikh community in the riding, but of course it's (about) the issues that affect everyone in the riding," he said.

Virk has lived in Surrey for more than 20 years and works as a trust, estate and corporate lawyer.

He will take on Harry Bains of the New Democratic Party (NDP).
