The state government has postponed the elections to gurdwara parbandhak committees following the recent heavy snowfall in various parts of the state, and representations by various quarters belonging to the Sikh community.

The elections were scheduled to be held on January 15.

In a high-level meeting chaired by law minister Mir Saifullah, several issues related to the conduct of elections to gurdwara parbandhak committees under the Jammu and Kashmir Gurdwaras and Religious Endowments Act, 1973, were discussed and it was decided that the elections would be postponed and new dates would be announced later.

The minister said as per the court directions regarding delimitation of the constituencies, fresh exercise for the elections would be conducted by the revenue financial commissioner.

A section of Sikh community had opposed holding elections in December. It had said more than 50% of the Sikh population migrates outside Kashmir for about four months in winter, and had alleged that some vested interests were deliberately insisting on holding elections in this period for their own gain.

Revenue financial commissioner Arun Kumar, finance principal secretary finance BB Vyas, law and parliamentary affairs secretary Mohammad Ashraf Mir and other officers were also present at the meeting.
