While it was always known that walking the streets at night is not a wise thing to do given the increasing number of snatchings, rapes and abductions, but now you may not be safe even in your car.

At least one carjacking incident is reported every week, raising questions on security measures adopted by the police force. Vehicle thefts are also on the rise with one car being stolen every five hours.

"There are several gangs who operate in groups and target luxury cars. The gang members are mostly from neighbouring districts and we have identified few vulnerable points. They mostly look for a car where they can break into easily," said a senior police officer.

Nearly 50 cases of carjacking have been registered in Gurgaon this year and the area near Leisure Valley Park is most vulnerable.

"The gang strikes when people are alighting or getting into the car. In most cases, we have found that robbers drive away with the car with the occupants, rob them and then dump them in an isolated place. We have managed to trace few accused but there are many gangs operating in the area," the official further said.

In September, the manager of a company was held hostage in his car for over an hour and dumped later.

According to the police, vehicle thief gangs are active in Sushant Lok, DLF and parking lots near call centres.
