The Guwahati high court on Wednesday granted bail to RTI activist Akhil Gogoi who was arrested in connection with the June 22 protests here during which three persons were killed and over 50 others were injured.

Justice Anima Hazarika, after hearing the bail application of Gogoi and going through the case diary of Dispur police station, granted bail to Gogoi.

Gogoi, charged under IPC Sections 141, 142, 143 (Offences against Public Tranquility), 307 (Offences affecting life, including murder, culpable homicide) and 336 (causing hurt), was likely to be released from jail on Thursday.

The RTI activist, who is also secretary of Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti, was arrested on June 24 from Guwahati Press Club during a press conference for allegedly leading the violent protest against eviction of encroachers by the state government.

He was initially remanded to three days police custody and subsequently to judicial custody.

The Assam government has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident.
