Had she not been at the “wrong place” at a “wrong time,” Binita Gadani, 22, would have been alive today, feel the relatives and neighbours of the software engineer from Kandivli who was among those killed in Saturday’s blast at German Bakery in Pune.

Binita, who worked with an MNC at Pune for the last one-and-a-half years, had come to Mumbai a few days ago to attend the engagement ceremony of her elder sister Bijal that took place on Tuesday. “She had earlier planned to leave for Pune on Sunday afternoon. But she had to leave on Saturday morning as her friends in Pune had planned a get-together in the evening,” said Praful Mehta (43), a relative of the Gadanis. He said she was apparently hit by sharp nails and splinters while she and four of her friends were walking near the bakery.

Binita’s family – her parents and sister Bijal – stays at Milan apartment in the Dahanukarwadi area of Kandivli (W). While her father Bipin works with a textile firm, her mother Hina is a housewife. Bijal is a chartered accountant by profession.

The parents were inconsolable, relatives said. “They left for Pune on Saturday night and identified her body. They are back home, but are still in shock,” the relative said.

Neighbours said Binita was a hardworking and brilliant student.

“The family’s financial condition was not sound. Binita financed her studies from the money she earned from scholarships. Her mother did odd jobs at times in order to support the daughters’ education, so that they could achieve excellence,” said B B Bhavsar, a neighbour of the Gadanis.

Binita completed her graduation from Thakur College. “She was bright, well-mannered and was adored by everyone in the housing society,” said Vivek Parikh, another neighbour.
