THOUGH THE temperatures dropped down some notches in the State capital on Sunday, when compared to Saturday, the weather conditions remained very oppressive, forcing the citizens to spend their entire Sunday indoors.
The City recorded a maximum of 43.5 degrees on Sunday; 0.5 degrees lower than the highest of season recorded on Saturday at 44 degrees. However, this minor fall hardly made any impact on the weather conditions.
The sun became scorching hot right since the morning hours and the citizens literally sweated it out all through the day. The day being a Sunday provided some relief to the office-goers, but the other section of society including the traders, daily wage earners and field workers had a very tough day, as sun got better of them. The tar on the roads melted, hot winds blew over and made life hell for people.
Some scattered clouds were again noticed on city skies on Sunday evening, but were not much of a respite. People remained indoors till early evening and came out only when the sun started reaching horizon and went about their routine shopping.
A huge crowd was witnessed near the upper lake later in the evening, as people tried to catch some cool air coming from the lake. People were seen enjoying boating as also drinking traditional cool drinks like nimbu shikanjbeen, aam ka pana and jalzeera and even lassi by the gallons. The traditional cool drink stalls have cropped up literally everywhere in city and citizens are making maximum use of them to keep themselves cool.
The consumption of bottled cold drinks has also shown a rise, though the traditional drinks are surely beating them out as of now. Ice cream, fruits juices and shakes are also being consumed in large quantities.
During the last week, the temperatures have steadily risen in the City. On May 1, its was 41.7 degrees, May 2 – 42.5 degrees, May 3 – 42.4 degrees, May 4 – 41.7 degrees, May 5 – 43.4 degrees and May 6 – 44 degrees.
