A college-going girl, allegedly harassed by a local youth for a year, on Tuesday hanged herself in her classroom in Sitapur, 88 km from Lucknow, police said.
The girl, identified as Prateeksha, was a Class XII student and was being harassed by a youth from the same locality. A spokesman of the local police said that a school peon when locking rooms spotted the girl hanging from the ceiling of her classroom.
The incident took place at the Arya Inter College within the Kotwali police station jurisdiction. The principal of the college called the police and later the family was informed.
The girl's father alleged that a boy named Aman was harassing his daughter for the past one year. The boy would phone her and stalk her, the father told the police and accused them of not paying heed to the family's complaints in the past.
Sitapur additional superintendent of police (ASP) BB Singh said that the police were probing the girl's death and that action would be initiated against the guilty.
A girl set herself afire last week in Kanpur after being similarly stalked by an eve-teaser. She died on Monday.
