Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda on Wednesday defended caste panchayats (khaps), saying they had no role in honour killings.
The Congress chief minister was asked to attend a meeting of the Group of Ministers (GoM) set up by the Prime Minister to look into a proposal for amending the existing laws to curb honour killings.
“The Haryana CM informed the GoM that khaps have no role in honour killings. They settle minor disputes arising in villages,” Women and Child Development Minister Krishna Tirath said after the meeting.
The GoM will continue consultations, since many states are yet to send their views on the subject.
