A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) activist has filed an application with the police, accusing Emraan Hashmi of promoting enmity between different communities after the actor alleged that he was denied a flat for being a Muslim.

On Saturday, social activist and executive member of BJP’s National Youth Committee Sanjay Bedia approached the DB Marg police station against Hashmi’s statement.

The application also names director Mahesh Bhatt for supporting Hashmi. Bedia said the actor’s statement had hurt his sentiments.

“This is just for publicity. The actor and Bhatt have made a baseless comment without thinking about the consequences,” said Bedia.

“This complaint is not about the flat or the no-objection certificate. It is about sentiments of communities. Thankfully, Mumbaiites are sensible and did not react to the allegation. It could have created communal tension,” added Bedia.

The police, however, are passing Bedia’s application from one police station to another.

N R Mali, senior inspector of DB Marg police station, said: “We have passed the application to the Bandra police as the actor stays there [Pali Hill] and the flat is also in that area.” said Mali.

“We have got the application and are in the process of passing it to the Khar police station,” said Prakash George, senior inspector of Bandra police station.

“The application has been filed by a political party member and has political vested interests. Why would Hashmi lie?” said Majid Memom, lawyer of Hashmi and Bhatt.
