After two days of high drama, the Andhra Pradesh police on Tuesday arrested hate speech accused Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi.

The police have registered four cases against Owaisi, the MLA of Chandrayangutta constituency in Hyderabad, on charges of promoting enmity between different groups and waging or attempting to wage war or abetting waging of war against the government of India.

Owaisi was arrested from the state-run Gandhi Hospital, where he was taken for an examination. Doctors ruled Owaisi had adhesions and hernia in the abdomen, and a bullet lodged in his right thigh was pressing the sciatic nerve. Police found Owaisi, who returned from London on Monday, was fit to face questioning.

Moments before Owaisi was arrested, restive MIM supporters outside the hospital threw stones on buses and other vehicles, forcing the police to disperse them and seal the routes to the facility.

Owaisi was taken to Nirmal, a small town about 217 km north of Hyderabad, where he had allegedly delivered an inflammatory speech on December 22 last year. Videos of this speech uploaded on YouTube have gone viral.
