IN A significant order, the Allahabad High Court on Friday directed that all the nine State medical colleges imparting education in Indian Medicine (Ayurvedic and Unani) shall not be allowed to function as the Indian Medicine Central Council had not granted recognition for running the courses since 2000.

The court further directed that the State Government shall not continue with counselling for admission of students into these colleges. “None of these colleges barring the Ayurvedic and Unani College, Muzaffarnagar have requisite infrastructure, namely library, hospital and teaching faculty”, the court observed.

However, while passing these directives, Justice Sunil Ambwani said it would be open to the State Government to seek recognition from the Indian Medicine Central Council or to even seek provisional/temporary recognition if it was permissible under the regulations framed by the Council for running the courses and for admission counselling. The court passed these directives while hearing a contempt petition (No. 820 of 2002) filed by Rajesh Kumar Srivastava. The court has fixed August 21 for the next hearing.
