The Allahabad High Court granted bail to controversial Independent MLA Raghuraj Pratap Singh alias Raja Bhaiya, currently lodged in a jail at Bareilly, in a case under the Gangster Act.
Granting bail to the MLA, Justice S K Gupta observed that when two other person, arrested and later slapped with the Gangster Act along with Raja Bhaiya, have been already granted bail, there was no reason why the same should be refused to the legislator.
Raja Bhaiya and his supporters were arrested following an FIR lodged at Kunda police station in December last year by some BSP supporters who had accused the MLA and his aides of trying to murder a candidate of the Mayawati-led party during the Panchayat elections held in the city.
Besides Raja Bhaiya, who represents Kunda seat from the neighbouring district of Pratapgarh in the state assembly, the UP government in January had slapped Gangster Act on his cousin and former Samajwadi Party MP Akshay Pratap Singh and his aide Hari Om Srivastava, both of whom have been granted bail by the High Court.
Raja Bhaiya has been known to be close to SP and he was made a minister in 2006 by the then UP chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.
