The Madras high court on Friday gave notice to PMK founder S Ramadoss and the Election Commission (EC) on a petition seeking a ban on his party for recent incidents of caste violence in Tamil Nadu.

When the petition filed by a Dalit organisation called Makkal Mandram came up for hearing, a division bench comprising acting chief justice RK Agarwal and justice Sathyanarayanan issued notice also to the collectors and police chiefs of Kanchipuram and Villupuram districts, the theatre of the disturbances, and Vanniyar Sangam president Kaduvetti J Guru, apart from the EC and Ramadoss.

The ban was sought because PMK leaders reportedly made provocative speeches, resulting in violence.
