The Delhi High Court on Friday slammed television channels for inducing people to commit an offence and then projecting it as a "sting operation" or "scoop". The court was pronouncing judgement in the Uma Khurana case.
Uma, a government teacher, was arrested after television channel Live India aired a sting operation showing her pushing schoolgirls into prostitution. A Bench had on September 11 taken suo motu cognisance following an
report that the teacher had been trapped in a concocted operation.
Sting operations showing acts and facts that are truly happening may be necessary as a tool of justice, but a hidden camera cannot be allowed to depict something which is not true.
