india Updated: Dec 11, 2009 14:41 IST

Orissa High Court has stayed the collection of enhanced tuition fees by the Kendriya Vidyalaya in the state.

Notices have been issued to the union HRD ministry and commissioner of Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathanto place their views on the matter.

Justice M M Das, on Thursday, ordered the stay and issued the notices returnable in four weeks. The judge, however, allowed the vidyalaya to collect fees at old rates until further order.

The city based vidyalaya has in a September circular enhanced tuition, computer and development fees of Classes IX, X, XI and XII by over 150 to 500 per cent.

The guardians were to pay the fees at enhanced rates from October, 2009.

Challenging the circular, a body of guardians had moved the High Court saying that the vidyalaya had increased the fees without discussing the same with them.

The monthly tuition fee for Classes IX and X has been increased from Rs 40 to Rs 200, a rise of 500 per cent, said the petitioners' advocate Gopinath Padhy. The tuition fees for Classes XI and XII have been increased from Rs 50 to Rs 300 per month.

Similarly, monthly computer fee has been hiked by 150 per cent from Rs 20 to Rs 50 and development fee from Rs 160 to Rs 240, he said.
