Taking suo motu cognizance of media reports about an indebted farm labourer ‘pawning’ his two young daughters to a money lender, the Andhra Pradesh high court on Tuesday asked the Karimnagar district collector to submit a report in two days.

The bench expressed anguish at the state of affairs and, besides the collector, made the superintendent of police and Andhra Pradesh chief secretary and home secretary respondents in the case. The case may come up for hearing next week.

Following a tip-off by locals, the police rescued the two girls, aged 16 and 5, from the custody of money lender Nara Jahangir on Friday. Jahangir was arrested on Saturday and remanded to judicial custody. The girls have been sent to the care of the district child protection officer.

The girls’ father had borrowed R34,000 from Jahangir six months ago to meet some urgent family needs but could not pay in time. Jahangir was pressuring and threatening him to repay the loan. To get Jahangir off his back, he agreed to leave the two girls as “security” with him.
