He tramples upon children up to the age of three years, claiming this cures them of ailments. Meet Chamatkari Baba aka Ram Lakhan Yadav, (50) a senior technician with the National Thermal Power Corporation, Unchahar.

Calling himself a devotee of Goddess Durga, he say he attains supernatural powers on the ashtamis  (eighth days) of the Sharadia (autumn) and Chaitra (spring) Navratras.

Often seen at the Jwala Devi Temple, in Khojanpur adjacent to the NTPC, Unchahar, he also claims he can rid people of evil spirits. Taken in by such claims, ruralfolk flock to him from the adjoining districts of Pratapgarh, Fatehpur and Allahabad.

With his bare hands, he can take puris out of boiling oil, he says.

About four years ago, a woman fell unconscious when he was trying to cure her by trampling upon her. She died later. Police took note of the case, but could not make much headway due to lack of proof.

Originally, a native of Ambedkar Nagar district, Chamatkari Baba lives in the NTPC township in Unchahar.
