A head constable of the Bandra railway police laid down his life for the call of his duty, chasing suspected cellphone snatchers on the tracks near Bandra station.
Police sources said the incident happened on February 9 during a special drive. Officials said the drive was in response to the increasing cases of youngsters hitting commuters talking on phone, standing on the train’s footboard, and then fleeing with the gadget when it fell from its owner’s hands.
Police sources said head constable Laxman Ahimave (47) and constable Nitin Jagtap (31), who were on night duty were patrolling the tracks.
The duo then saw some youngsters standing there in a suspicious manner. When the officials approached them they tried to run away.
The constables gave them a chase but they failed to see an approaching train, which hit Ahimave.
“Ahimave died instantly,” said Inspector Rajiv Sawant. The deceased had served the force for 27 years.
Jagtap, who remained unscathed, has been in a state of trauma and taken ill. “The incident has shocked him,” said Assistant Police Inspector P. Barve.
