When Manmohan Singh meets Barack Obama in Washington on Sunday, David Headley, Afghanistan and Iran will be some of the key issues that will be taken up.
Delhi is expected to make a strong pitch for Headley’s extradition, and the issue will be raised by National Security Adviser Shivshankar Menon during a meeting with his counterpart Gen (Retd) James Jones.
“We will keep pushing...This will be one of the issues...We’ll use every occasion to seek access (to Headley),” sources said.
New Delhi’s prefers the LeT operative’s extradition as the crime was committed in India, they said. However, if it takes time then India will like to have direct access to him through legal process so it (the information provided by Headley) is admissible in courts in India, the sources said.
India made it clear on Saturday that it would continue to play a role in the war-torn nation “with or without America” as it has crucial stakes in the stability of country on its periphery. This comes amid talk of the US looking for a strategy to exit Afghanistan.
On the question of Iran, too, India and US are not on the same page. As the US gathers support to impose fresh sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programme, India opposed such a step, saying it would not solve the problem.
At the same time, India wants Iran to work with the IAEA to convince the world that it is not seeking nuclear weapons as claimed by it.
