The government is working on a roadmap to cover the beneficiaries of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) under its health insurance scheme for families below the poverty line, called the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) under which a over of up to Rs 30,000 is given.
As many as 20 million people, about half of those covered by NREGS, could gain from the initiative. A high-level meeting to discuss the extension of RSBY to beneficiaries of NREGS was called by TK Nair, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister on Wednesday.
The government plans to extend the health scheme to those who have worked for at least 15 days in the previous financial year under the NREGS.
“In the next 3 months, the rural development Ministry will take a decision and the beneficiaries will be covered in the next 3 to 4 years,” said a government source involved in the scheme.
