A day after a three-month-old child died shortly after being given a routine vaccination shot at a government-organised camp on Tuesday, health department team from Bhopal visited anganwadi centre in Ujjain district's Bandka village on Wednesday to take stock of the situation.

The team also met the deceased's parents, who alleged that their child died because of the vaccine and the callous attitude of auxiliary nurse midwives (ANM) who vaccinated the child at the anganwadi centre.

The short post-mortem report suggested that the infant died of suffocation. Notably, this is the second incident within a span of 10 days in Ujjain district in which the reason of death was suffocation.

Three-and-a-half month old Krushna was administered DPT (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) vaccine on Tuesday morning and he died after 30 minutes.

On Wednesday, Dr Ashwini Bhagwat, state vaccination officer, Dr Sunil Sharma from Bhopal, Dr SK Singh, block medical officer, Dr KC Parmar, district vaccination officer, Sanjay Sisodiya, supervisor and others visited Bandka anganwadi centre where the child was administered DPT vaccine by AMN Rajani Dandekar.

The team members met the child's parents who had alleged that the infant died because of the vaccine. The child's father, Dinesh Panchal, said the boy started frothing in the mouth within 30 minutes of receiving the injection.

"When we informed the anganwadi assistant there, she said it was common and the child might cry for the rest of the day," the father said.

When the child's health worsened, the parents decided to take him to the district hospital where he was declared brought dead.

On the other hand, AMN Dandekar said on Tuesday that she administered the vaccine to four kids including Krushna and the remaining three kids are fine.

Rubbishing Panchal's claim, she said he never came to her after vaccination. She further said they have all lifesaving medicines to handle any situation.

The health department team, after its preliminary investigation, said vaccination was not responsible for the child's death as more than two lakh kids had been vaccinated with DPT vaccine, while 1.19 lakh infants in MP have been vaccinated with Pentavalent vaccine, but no case of casualty or infection has been reported.

"Once we get viscera and skin report from forensic lab, we will know the exact cause of death," team members added.

Meanwhile, Panbihar police chowki registered a case under Section 174 CrPC in the matter.
