While there’s a love guru around every corner, there’s now well, a break-up guru too. These new breed of babas, unlike the ones who say they can get you your lover with black magic, claim they can help you get rid of that troublesome partner with a break-up or divorce that seems difficult. What’s more, their ‘divine’ tricks are hi-tech, and manifest on Facebook, Twitter and through 24/7 live chats.

Pundit Yogiraj, based in Shakarpur, for instance, calls himself ‘Yogiraj break-up and divorce expert’ on his website. His clientele includes college-goers and call-centre executives, and in addition to offering online break-up advice, he teaches you what to say when breaking up and how to write a break-up letter or SMS. He chats live with his overseas clients at the rate of 5$ (Rs 250) per minute. For local clients, he charges an ‘email fee’ to answer queries. “I help people handle break-ups smoothly through a combination of astrological powers and emotional support,” he explains.

Old-Delhi based Baba Ajmeri has even put up testimonials from clients along with pictures people whose break-ups he has facilitated. “A lot of young people email me their break-up related problems, and I solve them through kala ilm (black magic). I guarantee a break-up within 17 days,” he says. Another baba based in East Delhi, who calls himself ‘Vashikaran Specialist’ in his various online postings, says, “If you don’t have the guts to tell your lover that you want a break-up, I can make the break-up happen in 15 days.”

Psychologists call such claims utterly fake and baseless. “They’re spreading superstition among young people and cashing in on the emotional vulnerability of those going through a rough emotional patch,” says psychologist Dr Pulkit Sharma of VIMHANS.

‘He said my BF will start hating me’
Rekha (name changed on request) saw a Baba Sajid Ali’s ‘Get break-up through Black Magic’ advertisement and decided to call just for kicks. “He chanted a few obscure mantras and assured that my boyfriend will start hating me and leave me in a week.” Thankfully, nothing happened; we are still together!
