The torrential downpour and the resultant floods under the impact of the depression in the Bay of Bengal claims 11 lives in Nellore, reports Ashok Das.
The torrential downpour and the resultant floods under the impact of the depression in the Bay of Bengal have claimed 11 lives in Nellore district of Andhra Pradesh.
With surging floodwaters entering hundreds of homes, the district administration evacuated over 7,000 families in Gudur and Kavali areas.
Four members of an eight-member marriage party were drowned when the van they were travelling in was caught in the flash floods and overturned near Mammidipalli.
The remaining four were rescued by local fishermen.
In the neighbouring Kadapa district, 22 passengers travelling in a private bus were stuck in the middle of flooded causeway in the Chitwel-Rapur road since early morning.
The approaches to the causeway on both sides were washed away under the impact of sudden floods making access to the marooned people difficult.
The state government requisitioned a helicopter from Bengaluru to rescue these people, which include five women and four children, but the opera-tion was called off as the helicopter could not reach the area because of heavy rains and poor visibility.
The district administration is trying to send some food to these people, who have to spend the night in the bus. Rescue efforts will again be taken up on Tuesday.
The rains have caused extensive damage to large number of irrigation tanks and channels.
According to district administration, as many as 40 water tanks have either breached or were overflowing. Meanwhile, the weather office at Hyderabad said that the depression, which was 120 kms off the coast, was likely to cross between Nellore and Kavali tonight.
