Heavy and incessant rains in south Orissa claimed at least one life while floods in two major rivers inundated large areas, disrupting railway traffic, official sources said.
The flooded Vamsadhara river had inundated large areas of Rayagada district while a ten-year-old boy was washed away at Sanyasipur village under Padmapur block of the district, they said.
Landslides at two places had affected train services while a portion of the railway track between Theruvali and Kalyansinghpur stations had been washed away on Monday morning.
Reports said that about six feet of water was flowing over the railway track at the place where the damage had occurred.
As the heavy rains continued, huge boulders rolled down on the railway track from nearby hills at Leliguma on the Tikiri-Rayagada line and near Majhighariani temple on the outskirts of the Rayagada town last night, railway sources said.
The Bokaro-Alleppey Express train had been detained at Theruvali while the Koraput-Howrah Samaleswari Express and Koraput-Visakhapatnam DMU had been cancelled for the day, they said.
